Germany's electricity grid combines the most ambitious renewables expansion in the EU with the fastest fossil retirement: by 2025, wind and solar together delivered 56% of public-grid generation. The country shut its last three nuclear reactors in April 2023 and is phasing out coal by 2038 (or earlier under coalition agreements). Bundesnetzagentur, the federal regulator, oversees four TSOs — TenneT, 50Hertz, Amprion and TransnetBW — that together operate the joint DE-LU bidding zone.

The country's north hosts vast offshore wind clusters in the North and Baltic Seas, while the south depends on imports and hydropower from Austria/Switzerland; the proposed bidding-zone split has been politically deferred. Day-ahead prices on EPEX SPOT show extreme intraday volatility — solar overproduction frequently drives midday prices below zero in spring, while late-winter dunkelflauten push them above €500/MWh.

FAQGermany

How is the electricity price determined?
Day-ahead prices in Germany are auctioned each morning around 13:00 CEST on Nord Pool / EPEX. The cheapest mix of generation that meets demand wins; that price applies for the next 24 hours.
When is electricity cheapest?
Today's average wholesale price in Germany is € 0.1311 /kWh. Cheapest hours typically fall between 00:00–04:00 CEST and around midday on sunny / windy days.
Why is my electricity bill higher than the spot price?
The wholesale spot price you see here is one component. Your retail bill in Germany also adds electricity tax, grid fees, VAT and a supplier markup — total roughly 30–60 % above wholesale.
How accurate is this data?
Source: ENTSO-E Transparency Platform, the EU regulator's data feed. Updated every 10–20 minutes.
Are tomorrow's prices already known?
Tomorrow's day-ahead prices for Germany appear on this page automatically once Nord Pool / EPEX closes the auction around 13:00 CEST each day.
